We gained planning approval for a sensitive site on a prominent route into York populated by a variety of houses and villas widely varying in scale and style. The proposal seeks to replace a dark and outdated elevated dormer bungalow with a modest, highly sustainable contemporary home. Working closely with the Planning and Conservation officers the design evolved through a very careful mapping and analysis of the existing site. Situated in the former gardens of the nearby Elmbank Hotel the design strikes a careful balance between the sometimes conflicting demands of a gateway site into a housing estate, proximity to the nearby listed hotel, a contemporary contribution to a historic street frontage and a flexible and accessible family home.
