Demountable structures differ from typical structures in several ways. The structural components are often lightweight, rapidly assembled, readily dismantled and reusable. They can offer a fast, flexible and cost effective solution for multiple uses in many locations. Clear foresight at future dismantling using modular design principles will allow an inherently environmentally light-touch structure which embraces the principles of a circular economy.
We have identified 6 key themes for considering demountable structures, these each have nodes to prompt additional considerations during the design process.
