Navigating the complexity of existing buildings can be challenging, however the rewards in retaining and re-using them are substantial. The benefits range from dramatically reducing carbon footprint from waste materials to conserving heritage assets for future generations. At EDable we have developed a methodology to help inform this process, which we have implemented on our projects as a step towards improving our approach to design. The methodology includes a 12 step design strategy.
The purpose of this methodology is to encourage life and new development into under-used existing buildings whilst supporting and celebrating their heritage. The acts as an important prompt for clients and the design team at all stages to review the actions being taken to deliver a project as sustainably as possible. This methodology should be reviewed at all RIBA stages; from development of the brief, siting of the proposal, to the operation of the site during construction and the use over time.
